Tennis: Carmel, Fishers reach state semis
In the IHSAA state tournament, Carmel and Fishers girls tennis teams both advanced to the semi-finals.
Grayhounds hosted their quarter-final match at Todd Witsken Tennis Center, where they defeated Zionsville 5-0 to advance to the semifinals. With Lauren Littell winning 6-0, 6-0 in the final match, Carmel won all of her matches.Greyhound coach Bryan Hanan predicted the team would be focused from the moment they started warming up.
There are "experienced girls" in the group, Hanan said. When the season gets tough, teams have to step up their game. That's what we did today against a good Zionsville team.While this was going on, the fourth-seeded Fishers played its quarterfinal match at Center Grove on Friday. To get to the semi-finals, the Tigers had to beat No. 9 Evansville Memorial by a score of 3-2.
Caroline Ober clinched a 6-0, 6-1 victory for Fishers in the No. 3 singles match. The No. 1 doubles team of Emma Beehler and Cassie Maurer won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while the No. 2 doubles team of Madelyn Barron and Meredith Ober won in straight sets, 7-5, taking the second set and the match.
In the state semi-finals, which begin at 10 a.m., Carmel and Fishers will travel to Center Grove, Indiana. No. 5 South Bend St. Joseph is the opponent for the Greyhounds, while No. 20 Delta is the opponent for the Tigers. At 2 p.m., the winners will compete for the state title.
